La Madone was made famous by Lance Armstrong’s now notorious book “It’s Not About the Bike”. Don’t let that put you off though, this cycling mountain is legendary and steeped in cycling folklore.
Cycling to the foot of the climb takes you along the stunning coast via Menton towards the Italian border. An amazing start to an amazing ride!
WHAT TO EXPECT
The climb starts with switchbacks that take you out of your rhythm, and then settles into a steady 6-9% grade over 14km that takes focus and resolve as you get higher. It is after the left-turn at the village St Agnès that the climb becomes more alpine and passes through ancient tunnels.
The return itinerary can include coffee at la Turbie, a must for visiting cyclists.
